Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.

I didn’t express it so much on Friday, but I’m really surprised by Tim’s predictions this week. Considering how many times he’s seen The Hunger Games, I’m surprised he didn’t have more faith in it to hold on for a third weekend. Instead he predicted American Reunion would be the movie to claim victory this weekend, despite being a tired, older franchise. As our own reviewer pointed out, he wasn’t even old enough to enjoy the original chapters when they came out, making a sequel less relevant for contemporary audiences. Meanwhile, Hunger Games fever continues to soar, leading the Games to its third weekend on the top:

The rest of the box office plays out pretty much as Tim expected, although Titanic wound up coming in a bit lower than I expected after the media went crazy about its return (as did movie fans if our own traffic is any indication). I guess I expected more people to actually go see Cameron’s epic, but it looks like more people read about it than saw it, or maybe saved their pennies and just watched the old DVD or VHS copy lying around the house. Either way, I expected more.

This week has more promise in the way of competition against The Hunger Games, but don’t expect that fever to die down. The big news story this weekend was whether Gary Ross would be returning for the sequel, so it’s clear people haven’t had enough of Katniss Everdeen quite yet. Can The Cabin in the Woods or The Three Stooges steal some of that momentum? Check back mid-week to see what Tim thinks, as Tim takes on the box office!
